MPOX

What is the current situation of Mpox?

Kenya declared an outbreak of Mpox on 31st July 2024,Currently a total of 724 cases have been confirmed in Nakuru, Mombasa, Busia, Nairobi, Kajiado, Bungoma, Taita Taveta, Kericho, Makueni,Kitui,Narok, Kilifi, Kiambu, Uasin Gishu, Migori,Kirinyaga, Isiolo,Kisii.

The National Public Health Institute would like to inform the Public that there is an ongoing cholera outbreak in the country. 

Cholera is a serious diarrheal disease caused by eating food or drinking water that has been contaminated with a bacteria called Vibrio cholerae.If not treated quickly, it can lead to severe dehydration and even death.

 * Do not drink water directly from rivers, lakes or other open sources.

* Drink and use safe water. Water may be made safe by boiling, or using domestic water treatment chemicals.

* Store water in clean containers.

* Prepare and cook food thoroughly and with treated water (eat while hot).

* Frequently clean and disinfect surfaces, especially those that come into contact with food or hands.

* Wash your hands with safe running water and soap  at critical times, including;

        [a]After using the toilet or handling faeces. 

        [b]]Before, during, and after preparing food. 

        [c]Before and after eating food. 

* If caring for a patient, always wash your hands before and after providing care, and after handling any soiled items (such as clothes, and linens).

* After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet.

* Solid waste, including feaces, should be disposed of properly to prevent contamination of water sources and food. Pit latrines should be securely covered to prevent contamination.

* Use toilets/latrines. Avoid open defecation. Toilets/ Latrines should be kept clean, properly maintained, and accessible to all. 

* If you or a household member develops sudden watery diarrhea, seek health care immediately.

 ๐ˆ๐ง๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ฏ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ ๐ฆ๐š๐๐ž:

 * Multisectoral Rapid Response Teams have been activated.

* Surveillance has been strengthened across all sub-counties and border areas to quickly identify and respond to cases.

* Six isolation facilities are operational, equipped with treatment guidelines, trained healthcare workers, and necessary medical supplies.

* Public sensitization is ongoing via local radio stations and public forums, with educational materials distributed across affected areas.

* Water treatment chemicals, soap, handwashing stations, and hygiene items have been distributed.

 Together, we can stop the spread of cholera and protect our communities.

Ebola

Kenya is on high alert following the declaration of Ebola outbreak in Kampala by the Ugandan Ministry of Health on 29th January 2025. Risk of importation of the disease is high due to high cross border movement of people and goods between Kenya and Uganda. Measures such as enhance surveillance at the points of entry and screening have been instituted.

Marburg

As of early January 11th 2025, Tanzania reported the outbreak of Marburg viral deseas in Kagera region in North Western part of Tanzania.Risk of importation of the disease is high due to high cross border movement of people and goods between Kenya and Tanzania. Measures such as enhance surveillance at the points of entry and screening have been instituted.

Polio

Kenya is currently experiencing an outbreak of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus 2 (cVDPV2) in Garissa and Turkana counties. In response, two rounds of a supplementary immunization campaign have been conducted in the high-risk counties. Further immunization campaigns are being planned to interrupt transmission of the virus.

Measles

Since February 2024, 1,246 cases of measles have been reported in the country with one (1) death. Enhanced surveillance is being implemented in all the counties. The National Vaccines and Immunization Program (NVIP) is coordinating a nationwide Big Catch-Up exercise for vaccine-preventable diseases.
